Shibori and Indigo Dyeing * 3 Day Workshop CLASS IS CANCELED

This workshop will be held at a nearby farm, 15 minutes south of Waukesha.
You will need: OLD clothes that can get dirty and dish washing gloves
Using a fructose (1-2-3) natural indigo vat, students will learn a few shibori techniques to pattern and then dye cotton napkins with indigo they have learned to prepare for use. The napkins will be pre-scoured and ready for dye. Samples of various shibori will be shown.
Day 1 & 2 – prepare indigo vats of 2%, 5% and 8% strengths. A variety of shibori techniques (stitched, tied, folded and bundled). Students will have the remainder of the day and the second day to make their shibori samples. Samples must soak for a minimum 2 hours before dyeing. Students will be shown proper fiber manipulation IN the dye vat and rinsing (LOTS of rinsing!) and finishing.
Day 3 will be for dyeing and rinsing (cut off for dyeing will be 1PM to allow proper rinsing and clean up).
Each student will receive:

Their own indigo kit which will make a medium to dark 5-gallon vat of indigo that will dye several pounds of fiber. (They can choose to make a weaker vat with provided instructions for dyeing even more fiber).

A 5-gallon bucket with lid to make their vat and take home.

6 organic cotton prepared-for-dye napkins (approx.. 19” square).
-
½ yard of Moda’s Bella quilting cotton, prepared-for-dye.

Sample sizes of linen and lightweight Japanese cotton prepared-for-dye.

Needles, thread and use of instructors tools for various shibori techniques.

Non-latex nitrile gloves (several pair) and dust mask (for mixing the powders).

Paint Your Wool Yarn or Fiber

Class size limited to 4 people. Choose morning or afternoon

(you may choose to dye up to 2 skeins of yarn for the additional materials fee)
Beginners encouraged and welcome
You will need: OLD clothes that can get dirty and dish washing gloves
If you like, bring your knitting or crochet to work on when the yarn is going through a heat process
Take home a beautifully dyed skein of yarn.
In this workshop you will paint the yarn you choose with premixed dyes meant especially for dyeing protein fibers such as wool, silk and alpaca.
The yarn you choose to dye will be pre mordanted and ready for you to start painting.

Select up to 2 skeins of yarn to paint in the 3 hour workshop.
**If you choose to dye your own wool yarn. check with studio for instructions on how to prepare for dyeing. there will be a $5 material fee to select when registering for class

Paint Your Wool Warp and Weft for Weaving

Materials: Pre-wound and ready to dye Merino Wool warp 3 yards in length
8" wide at 8 epi and a 200 yard skein of yarn for weft - Cost $40
or
12" wide at 8 epi and a 300 yard skein of yarn for weft - Cost $50

Bring your own wool warp and weft yarn Cost: $10
Contact studio about pre mordanting your yarn
Workshop includes everything you need to create your weaving warp and weft to make a colorful scarf.
Begin by using dyes to design the colors you like on the warp as it is stretched out on a table. Then using the same or different dyes you will dye the weft yarn.
This combination will create your one of a kind scarf.
The weaving can be done on a rigid heddle loom or floor loom.


Paint Your Tencel Warp and Weft for Weaving
Instructor: Nancy Wilson
Class size limited to 4 people
To be scheduled in January
Workshop Cost: $65
Materials: Pre-wound and ready to dye 3 yard warp 8/2 Tencel warp
(can be woven at 8.5" wide at 24 EPI or 10" at 20 EPI)
(2) 200 yard skeins yarn for weft. Cost: $50

Bring your own pre-wound wool warp and weft yarn Cost: $10
